Lessons learned will guide him for the rest of his life. Times change, though, and his comfort zone was tested when Army fired basketball coach Jimmy Allen on the eve of March Madness.
Allen had a record in seven seasons with the Black Knights. Benson was loyal to Allen, and the coach's departure made him question whether it was time for him to leave, too. As a basketball freshman this past season — he spent the previous year at the Military Academy Prep School — Benson averaged He comes from a tight-knit family and says he never makes an important decision without consulting his father, Kacy; mother, Vickie; and brother, Tyton.
They prayed together. 
After weighing the pros and cons, he entered the NCAA transfer portal. And last week he was offered — and accepted — a scholarship to continue his career at Texas State. I matured a lot. Being in the Army is not for me. I have the utmost respect for everyone who does this and everyone who sacrifices their lives to serve our country and protect our people.
Losing the coach was a sign to pull the trigger. Vickie Benson, who coaches the girls basketball team at Westlake, said she would have supported her son if he had chosen to stay at West Point and graduate, which would have been followed by at least five years of active service in the military. I'm excited to see how they incorporate him into what they do and how he can impact the program.
Also, I can't wait to get back to workouts in the gym together. I've missed that.
