This is what many Canadians have wondered since the suspension, and many anticipate the NHL will implement more stringent rules on gambling in the next collective bargaining agreement.
While the NHL has rules on gambling for their players, it is evident that these regulations are not readily publicized, and many players may not even know the rules to which they fall subject. Accordingly, the NHL should provide training and education programs for these players as to exactly what they can and cannot do in terms of gambling.
The Pinto situation is only breaking the seal on what could happen to these players, especially seeing as how many players may not exactly know what is put into their contracts and what constitutes a prohibited activity surrounding gambling. The NHL provides young players the chance to achieve their dreams, and I am critical that many of these players even read the terms of these contracts.
As such, how is it justified to punish an up-and-coming NHL player for activities that they may not have known were wrong. Many players sign as soon as they get the chance, so how are they to know NHL gambling is prohibited. Common sense may be the answer, and it is clearly best for players to air on the side of caution.
But for young players such as Shane Pinto, who may reasonably not be privy to league policies and may have routinely partaken in gambling prior to their NHL career, is it right to punish them. Pinto likely would have never known his actions were wrong, yet he was treated like a repeat offender since the game suspension he received was far and above that of typical league suspensions for violations of player safety, etc.
Evidently, something must change. The NHL needs to take note from their own book and understand that in a growing world of gambling, it is likely that some NHL players will participate. They are better to accept that fact and work on implementing relevant restrictions instead of making examples of young players.
But, at the same time, the NHL must uphold the integrity of the game. So, I propose the NHL provide clear rules surrounding gambling, make these rules public and accessible for all, and provide training programs for players to understand exactly what they can or cannot do.
