Find out which coaches have a history of exceeding expectations and which ones fail to live up to the hype. This can give you a big advantage when choosing sleeper teams or first-round upsets. How much experience does a college basketball coach need to lead a team to the Final Four. Recent history says about two decades. Whether Final Four coaches are longtime vets breaking through or coaching legends padding their already loaded resumes, having an experienced mentor at the helm is essentially a prerequisite for NCAA Tournament success.
Over the past 20 years, the average Final Four coach has had almost exactly 20 seasons of Division I head coaching experience. This trend has been eerily consistent, with the yearly average experience of the eight Final Four coaches falling in the narrow range of 19 to 21 seasons for the majority of tournaments since This year is no different, as the eight coaches still competing for the championships have an average of 21 seasons under their belts.
Admittedly, a small handful of Hall-of-Famers at powerhouse schools, especially on the women's side, boosts the mean. Geno Auriemma, for instance, has coached the UConn women since and has led them to 15 of the past 16 Final Fours.
