Eagles Film Review: The worst game on defense I’ve ever studied
No other answer makes any sense to me. Another disaster. It's SO easy. Both Maddox and Morrow run with the motion and then Blankenship is giving 10 yards of cushion. Just a simple slant and it's another easy 3rd down conversion. What else is there to say. It's terrible. There was so much confusion… pic. It was a strength of this team over the first half of the season, and the decline has been extremely sharp.
Jordan Davis is in this team to anchor and command double teams. He gets taken out of this play easily by 1 offensive lineman. He has to do better against the run. The number of times I saw Davis, Carter, and Cox turned sideways so you can see their numbers from the sideline view - which you never want to see was incredible.
Josh Sweat is charging upfield so he provides no resistance on the edge. Shaq Leonard cannot shed a block, and he is completely taken out of the play by the Cardinals' best-receiving weapon. I think Jalen Carter has looked a bit fatigued over the second half of the season, and I would consider using him in obvious pass rushing situations only to keep him fresh and let him attack like this. I'd be giving him some rest on early downs and keeping him fresh for obvious pass rushing situations against the Bucs.
This is a ridiculous play. I miss the Eagles being good in coverage. I know the defense sucked in the Super Bowl , but this team was so good at zone match for most of the season. I miss those days, so this play was a nice throwback to that. The Eagles' defense actually communicating and passing routes off. This was the strength of this team last year, so it depressed me that we haven't seen it this year.
My extremely basic plan for the Bucs is rush 4 and play zone behind it. I thought Jordan Davis was outstanding in this game. I also thought most of his best snaps came from a 4-man front. I am hoping he is feeling fresh right now, because the Eagles are going to need him to be back to his best if they have any chance in the playoffs. I think this would be my starting defensive tackle duo against the Bucs on early downs.
