He, in large part, because former head coach Jimmy Lake promised Washington would properly manage his injuries, reclassified and enrolled early at the school. Still, Megwa continued to try and push through the pain at the command of his coaching staff, furthering the deterioration of his knee. Megwa reported another instance of sharp pain in his left knee during a lifting session in late February, but was still not sent to a doctor.
The lawsuit claims that Megwa was unable to run by March, and finally was sent to see Dr. Megwa underwent his second reconstruction surgery with his original doctor but was instructed by a Washington coach to enter the transfer portal during spring exit meetings. After joining the Sooners as a walk-on, Megwa spent an entire year rehabilitating his knee, with continual surgical treatment according to the complaint.
According to the lawsuit, Megwa continued to report knee pain and swelling in his left knee throughout the month, but was given painkillers. During this time, the running back claims he was berated and ridiculed in front of his teammates for being unable to participate. During a lift in late February, he felt sharp pain in his left knee again but was again not sent to a physician, according to the lawsuit.
Megwa underwent a revision of his left ACL reconstruction with his original surgeon in Texas but was told to enter the transfer portal by a UW coach during his spring exit meetings, according to the lawsuit. He ended up walking on at Oklahoma but missed the season as he rehabbed his left knee. He played in two games in , totaling 6 rushing yards, but required ongoing surgical treatment according to the complaint.
These athletes obviously put their bodies on the line, but this was not a risk-of-football injury.
