Tweet Me. No teams chose to claim any players in the supplemental draft that year. This draft was notable for its high-profile offensive linemen. The first overall selection was Orlando Pace, who has appeared in seven consecutive Pro Bowls from to Tarik Glenn was selected 19th overall and has been named to three Pro Bowls as well.
Arguably the best of the bunch, Walter Jones, who made nine Pro Bowls including eight consecutive from —08 , was a seven time All-Pro, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in , was selected 6th overall. The Draft is also well known for its running backs. Warrick Dunn was drafted 12th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and rushed for over 10, yards in his career.
This draft is also well known for its undrafted Pro Bowl players. The Buccaneerss drafted alternately 8th, 7th and 6th through the seven rounds of this draft. The additional 1st round pick came courtesy of the San Diego Chargers in return for the Bucccaneers' second round pick the previous year.
The additional 4th and 7th round picks were compensatory for the loss of free agents. The Buccaneerss originally traded their 1st and 4th round picks to the Jets to move up two spots in the first round. This was the classic need vs. Most top personnel people favour the latter approach, believing talent is always a need, regardless of position. The winners will be determined in December. Ironically, the Jets initially looked like the winners of the deal. The Jets were edging toward a finish and close to a playoff berth. Yet, few members of the player draft haul contributed to this reversal of fortunes. Dedric Ward and Leon Johnson produced big plays on special teams, but Rick Terry was a notable disappointment at defensive tackle.
The other picks largely came and went unnoticed. The best player from this class was its final member, seventh-round nose tackle Jason Ferguson. He finished his rookie year as a starter and successfully anchored several fronts, also playing for Parcells with both the Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins. One late-round gem does not make a draft great or even good.
The meagre haul showed the dangers of giving a coach too much power. Kraft had overruled Parcells in the first round when the Pats took wide receiver Terry Glenn instead of picking a defensive lineman. The incident prompted a famous Parcells quip:. Parcells began a trend of coaches becoming football Czars when he assumed total control of the Jets.
Mike Holmgren would insist on the same deal to take over the Seattle Seahawks two years later. He never had a losing season in three years and guided the Jets to the AFC Championship during the season. Holmgren took the Seahawks to the Super Bowl following the campaign. Yet, neither man won the big prize, nor built a framework for sustained winning.
