The New England Patriots were a model franchise for over 20 years and in the past couple of years, have quickly descended into one of the worst in the league. While the team has still managed to play tough defense, their offense has regressed badly since Tom Brady departed in free agency in and when offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left the following offseason to take the Las Vegas Raiders head coaching job.

Now, with Bill Belichick announcing his departure from New England, we're wondering if and when the Patriots will return to prominence. It won't be easy in what is now a tougher AFC East, with the Buffalo Bills looking like perennial contenders and the Miami Dolphins, while flawed, still fielding a very explosive offense.

As the Patriots look to move their way back up the ladder, let's take another look at their recent QB history. However, not everything was great in that first season, as their new first-round pick was injured early in the season, and was replaced by Scott Secules, who had spent his career backing up Dan Marino in Miami.

Secules won his first game as a starter, but it was all downhill from there. In his four starts in , he tossed two touchdowns opposite nine interceptions. He was released after the season and was never signed again. Scott Zolak was drafted by the New England Patriots in and didn't play well in his few starts that year.

He was eventually relegated to the bench and would become the longtime backup quarterback for Drew Bledsoe. Zolak received some garbage time play over the years but did start three games from to While he didn't light up the scoreboard, he was far from an offensive starter and had some solid stats before leaving the team in Brian Hoyer was on the New England Patriots for the majority of his career, in multiple stints.

While he's bounced around other teams, he mostly sat on the bench for Bill Belichick. While a solid starter for other teams, he's incredibly only started two games for the Patriots. That sole start came in , a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. While he didn't look great in his only start, Hoyer has still played solid when coming off the bench and is reportedly the ideal passer to have in the film room.

That's perhaps why he signed with the Raiders prior to the season back when Josh McDaniels was their head coach. Remember when Bailey Zappe was hyped to the moon for a few weeks. In the season, with Mac Jones injured, Zappe was promoted to the backup role behind Hoyer, who also got hurt on the first drive in their early-season matchup with Green Bay.

Being thrust into your NFL debut against Aaron Rodgers isn't exactly ideal, but Zappe played very well in relief of Hoyer, and almost pulled off the upset in a loss. Zappe started the next two games for New England, winning in both his starts, beating the Lions and Browns respectively.

Bledsoe's success would be eclipsed the next decade when an injury caused him to be relieved by backup Tom Brady. As the franchise's longest-tenured quarterback from to , Brady is credited with the Patriots dynasty that saw them set the records for Super Bowl appearances and wins.

The Patriots' and starting quarterback is Mac Jones , who was named the starter at the beginning of his rookie season in However, due to injury early in the season high ankle sprain Bailey Zappe, a rookie, was named the starter. Patriots quarterbacks past Butch Songin became the first starting quarterback for the Patriots in , when the franchise was first established.

In , when the team moved to Foxborough and renamed from the "Boston Patriots" to the "New England Patriots", Jim Plunkett took over as quarterback. From until , the Patriots had no regular starting quarterback, with as many as five in one season, until Drew Bledsoe was drafted as the number one overall pick in the NFL Draft.

Before the start of the season , Bledsoe was traded to the Buffalo Bills and did not get to see the opening of the new Gillette Stadium in September Tom Brady has led the team for more regular season games , postseason games 40 , Super Bowl appearances 9 , and complete seasons 15 than any other quarterback in franchise history.

Brady also has led the team to all six of the franchise's Super Bowl victories, doing so in , , , , and Having been the starting quarterback 20 seasons, Tom Brady holds the record for the most starts and wins with the Patriots. Brady is also the leader in rushing attempts, but Steve Grogan has the most rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
