It joins the Big Ten as the only power conferences to include members on both the West and East Coasts. Read more here. Almost 30 years ago, SMU was one of the biggest victims of the first modern wave of conference realignment. On Friday, SMU completed the long road back, joining the ACC alongside Stanford and Cal to cap the most recent round of conference realignment, which again involved Texas and again may kill a conference.

This time, it was a celebration. We think. In the end, 17 schools either moved up to a Power 5 conference or flipped from one Power 5 league to another. They were outvoted, , and the new schools were officially added and announced by lunchtime Friday. But those three dissenters — Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina — have created a fascinating dynamic for this conference moving forward.

Cal chancellor Carol Christ was awoken at 5 a. Pacific Time with a loud knock on her hotel room door in San Diego. She opened the door, where a hotel employee informed her she had an urgent phone call. SMU is also coming aboard as the league expands to 17 full members, plus Notre Dame in non-football sports.

Yet another conference will span coast to coast. The future of Cal and Stanford involves more trips east, less television revenue than most of their new conference peers and perhaps splitting the travel distance with conference gatherings in Dallas. Read more from Chris Vannini and Stewart Mandel on what the move means for both programs.

I look forward to working with all our colleagues in the ACC to ensure excellence in academics and athletics — something our conference has long been known for. We're grateful to the league for continuing to listen to our concerns. The Pac is effectively destroyed with the ACC formally absorbing Cal and Stanford on Friday morning, save for whatever intellectual property is left on the otherwise emptied shelves.

Which left Barnes and school president Jayathi Murthy to take questions they had nearly no concrete answers for in a Zoom session with reporters. If you read between the lines on this one, it's not hard to know how Clemson feels. But what I can tell you is that we're not making any decisions quickly. We're thinking deeply about the issues at hand and we're not making decisions to chase dollars right now. So even though it looks that way to some of our critics, that's not what we're doing. Rumors for rumors sake, and a lot of yelling have dominated twitter since realignment kicked into overdrive.

Worrying about who would be joining, becoming the Hateful 8, welcoming the newcomers, worrying about tv right, and well just worrying and yelling. Mouth pieces of the PAC desperately trying to convince everyone they are fine and could even go raid the Big Big 12 mouth pieces and fans countering. Name calling. And more worrying. Frankly folks, I am just sick of this stuff.

Look, the PAC12 is maybe screwed. Maybe long-term the Big 12 is too. But what good does it do to yell at that Wilner guy. Or the random Utah fans. Does every post need a tweet long thread about how Utah is also a flyover state. And the worst part of this stuff, the absolute worst, are the damn rumors. Guys, there are real sources for news. Sportswriters and journalists who are reputable, and while they can be wrong they are trying to report on stories the best they can.

Even though I think some of the media clearly have agendas and sides, those guys have actual connections. Yeah, people may want to tell them only certain things to try and drive conversation, but they actually talk to industry experts and athletic directors and regents. The random freaking West Virginia burner account has never once known jackshit.

Even more maddening, the same accounts do this over and over and over.
